Stories behind social media glitters

‘Distracted from distraction by distraction’ A decade old quote by T. S Eliot rightly fits to reflect the inception of our lives nowadays. How our day to day activities are tangled between these distractions and the biggest of all distraction is ‘Social media world'. In this world the more filters you have, more recognized you will be. Be it filter on your personality or on your physical appearance. Not only people pursue to be fake on these social media platforms, it also takes so much from our personal lives. I am telling you all this from my personal experience. First phase of entering into this glitter world costs so much darkness into our lives. Phase one is of comparing yourself with everyone else based purely on physical appearance and materialistic things. You think that you are just scrolling through these apps nothing harm will happen, but that scrolling goes on for hours and hours and some darkness and depression is being drilled in your sub conscious mind. At that time it seems like nothing but when you post your picture on that platform, you put yourself out their ignoring all your insecurities thinking you will get many likes and will get good comments just like you saw on the picture of that one so called ‘social media influencer' but it does not go that way, this builds up so much more insecurities inside a teenager. That teenager ask him/herself ‘AM I good enough’ and the moment they ask this to themselves they are trapped in the darkness of social media world. Mostly teenagers are victims of this first phase of social media world. A 2018 Pew research center survey of nearly 750, 13 to 17 year olds found that 45% are online almost constantly and 97% use social media platform such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat. A 2019 study of more that 6500, 12-15 years in the U. S found that those who spent more than three hours a day using social media might be at heightened risk for mental health problems. A 2016 study of more than 450 teens found greater social media use at night time and emotional investment in social media brings feelings such as upset when prevented from logging on – were each linked with worse sleep quality and higher levels of anxiety and depression. If teens get guidance like reasonable limit is set for them from starting. There guardian should explain them what’s not okay like cyber bullying, spreading online rumors and things like these, should encourage face to face contact with friends. Thankfully with good guidance In my teen years I have been saved from phase one and the darkness of social media but what about those who do not get clear guidance in there teens, they are grown to be adults with low self-esteem and they use social media platforms as there weapons by being fake and frauds to thousands of people and not showing there real self. These types of people not once feel perturbed by doing these frauds. First let's explain it with small picture how these types of people effect normal human beings. Let’s talk about ‘beauty/fashion influencers' they advertise beauty products and post there pictures with hashtags like #naturalbeauty #withoutfilter #withoutmakeup to promote the product but obviously this is not the reality they use filters, camera lights, minimal make up to look good. They sell lies. Because in reality those beauty products are not much effective but that influencer have already gotten there commission on the basis of how much purchase of the product have been made and they also get money for promoting the product. Thousands of people has been trapped in scam like these. Now let's take big picture much darker side of social media glitters. As we all know the world is going through pandemic everyone is miserable in there own life but for some people it is an opportunity of treasures where again social media is there weapon. Where social media has come as an unexpected network for people looking for covid-19 resources in India: Twitter and Instagram are flooded with request of hospitals, beds, plasma, oxygen cylinder. The calls of SOS emergencies were being amplified across personal profiles and by influencers. But it turns out for some people everything comes with costs or we can say no good deed can be just good deed. Some influencers are charging fee to put out request for an oxygen cylinder. Sounds dystopic? This isn’t out of the ordinary – influencers are also monetizing the second wave of covid-19 pandemic in India which has led to a nation wide collapse of health case infrastructure. There are so much more darker stories in this huge network of platforms. It’s difficult to make these things right on larger aspect. These types of wrong actions are so much rooted in this virtual world. Change is difficult but not impossible, least we can do is shine the light of verity on these sham glitters.
