Snake Plant: The Hero

Mar 22, 2020

The snake plant is quite a hero , the reason I called it out hero because they are famous for their ability to survive in the most unsuitable growing conditions. If you are beginner gardener If you want to keep any indoor plants, I would suggest you keep a snake plant which is extremely hardy and which can survive even if u neglect it

Snake plants are often used as home decor, as they’re pleasing to the eye, easy to care for, and require little water to survive.

Air Purifier Approved by NASA

The NASA Clean Air Study was a project to research ways to clean the air in space station. Its results suggested that, in addition to absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen through photosynthesis, this plant may also provide a natural way of removing volatile organic pollutants (benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene were tested).

Botanical Name: Sansevieria trifasciata

Common Name: Snake plant, mother-in-law's tongue

Snake plant is unique since it converts a lot of CO2 (carbon dioxide) to O2 (oxygen) at night, making it ideal to have several in your bedroom. 6-8 plants are needed per person to survive if there is no air flow (meaning you could live in a completely air sealed room if you had these plants).

How to Grow Snake Plants

These plants can be neglected for weeks at a time; they still look fresh. They really are the easiest of plants to look after, and will happily reward your lack of attention by giving clean air to your home and a little cheer in the corner of any room. Snake Plants are evergreen that can grow anywhere from eight inches to 12 feet high. Their leaves are approximately two feet long. If You Want A Houseplant That:

  • Is tough indoors
  • Can be placed just about anywhere
  • Takes up little space
  • A good starter plant for the house
  • is extremely hardy and very tough to kill plant

SunLight:

This plant loves bright light, It will grow beautifully in bright light But the beauty of it If you can keep it in an extremely dark room , it will grow but slower and have less colour. A good spot for it would be about 3-6′ away from a window that gets a lot of light.

Water :

Easy does it with the watering. It can tolerate low water but not too much water. You want to be careful not to overdo it because your plant will rot out. Always make sure the soil is almost completely dry before thoroughly watering again. Water your Snake Plants once in a week, depending on your home’s temperature, light levels, and humidity. So, if you travel or tend to ignore plants, this is the 1 for you.

Fertilise :

This plant doesn't need to be fertilised very often. It can go without fertilisation very long. If you prefer fertilising, then an organic all-purpose houseplant food would be fine. Just be sure to fertilise in the spring and/or summer, twice at the most.

Soil:

The best soil that you must choose for planting or repotting a Snake plant is a free-draining soil or fast-draining soil. It is highly recommended using a soil-less potting mix or the ready to use the mix for cactus and succulent plant, If you only have a regular potting mix or regular soil, add some perlite or sand. Use a terracotta pot that will remove water from the saucer and will not trap water inside.

Propagating Snake Plants

Growing snake plant from cuttings is relatively easy. The most important thing to remember is that they can easily rot, so a free draining soil needs to be used. Leaf cuttings are the usual method but probably the easiest way to propagate snake plants is by dividing.

There are 3 ways to propagate snake plant

  • Leaf Cuttings In Soil
  • Dividing Snake Plant
  • Leaf Cuttings In water
